Rubik's Cube Card

I recently got a request for a Rubik's Cube easel card.  Sounded easy enough, of course.  But then I started thinking, "I can do better than that."  After looking around Google and YouTube a bit, this video seemed to provide a perfect answer.

A lovely lady named Eleanor was so kind to upload not only the video but also great pdf templates.  You can get the templates here.

The basic box is really pretty straight forward and easy.  Eleanor shows some at the end of her video with pictures on the 4 non-folding sides.  What a great Mother's Day card that would be...don't you think?

I did one mock up cube in heavy white printer paper just to make sure it's as easy as the video would lead you to believe and it is.  So doing the Rubik's Cube should just a matter of gluing little squares of bright paper to a black version, right?  Well, not so much.

First I had to play with the size for the colored squares a bit and decided that 3/4" X 3/4" was just right.  That size left a nice amount of the black showing.  So that part of the puzzle was solved.  (Get it?  Puzzle....Sorry, I am a dork.)  I, foolishly, put one cube together without gluing the squares on.  If you decide to try one of these, don't make that mistake.  It's so much easier if you attach the squares before you assemble the rest of the cube.  The only part I did glue together was the first flap that attaches the 2 sections of the cube.

The part of finishing this project that fought me all the way was getting the squares that fall in the creases of the folding sides to stay glued down.  Because the squares are so tiny and my fingers so sausage-esque, my beloved ATG wasn't an option.  So, I gave some Zigg 2-way a go....nope.  And I used a LOT of Zigg and allowed for plenty of dry time.  Okay then, next up: Scotch Quick Dry.  Nope.  Next: Scotch Scrapbooker's glue.  Aaaaarrrrgggg.  No!  I was running out of options.  But, then, I spotted my Glossy Accents.  I'm telling you a ray of light shone on it and I heard beautiful background music!  My answer was right there in that little bottle.

Here are a couple of pics of the finished cube and the sleeve.  I used a paper from SEI for the sleeve....sorry, I can't remember the name of the stack.  It felt like a good fit because of the grid pattern on it.

And here is my very first YouTube video.  It's just to show how the cube pops out of the sleeve.  The color in the video is really off.  Obviously I need to either video when there's more daylight or invest in a better camera.

Even though I struggled with this a bit, it was a really fun project to do and I'll be doing more of them.  I hope you'll give them a try too.  Either as a Rubik's Cube or with photos, they're sure to make quite an impact.
