Pretty great, right?

Now on to this month's theme:
My Techniques - Christmas:
A Technique I've Never Tried Before
This challenge revolves around the theme of Christmas & expanding your skills with a brand new technique you have never done before but have always wanted to give a go.

There are 2 questions that need to be included and answered in your post about your project.  They are:
1) Why did you want to try this technique?
2) What has been your experience with it?
>>You can see my answers a bit further down in the post.<<

Here's a little sneak peek of the new technique I tried:
Okay, so it's not really much of a peek of the actual technique.
If I showed too much the cat would be entirely out of the bag.

My choice for this challenge was completely inspired by my lovely Design Team sister, Cindy.  She and her Mom, Corrie, have started a new challenge blog all about embroidery on cards....What?  Hand embroidery on cards?!  It is some of the most beautiful stuff I have ever seen!  From what I understand it's very popular in the Netherlands (where Cindy and Corrie live.)   You can take a look at their challenges here.  The artistry displayed on the cards is phenomenal!!

Since I had never embroidered anything in my life I was a bit apprehensive at trying it.  Then I figured: what the heck.  It's only a bit of cardstock and thread.  If it fails I'll just try, try again.  My first attempt is what you see here!

This adorable image is Eleanor Santa's Helper
from
Lacy Sunshine.
I love everything Heather does at Lacy Sunshine
but Eleanor is my favorite!
She was cropped quite a bit so I could really
spotlight that incredible face of hers.

I have to admit that the embroidery did take me hours to do.
Keep in mind that I'm not a sewer.
~~I truly believe safety pins were invented so I wouldn't have to sew.~~
As I slowly stitched away, I watched a "Leverage" marathon on Netflix.
It was a cold, gray and rainy day so the time was well spent in my opinion.

These are the 2 supply items I used for the embroidery
in addition to the pattern.  You can see the thread is variegated.
That's what gave the great color changes in my swirls without
having to switch threads.
The only really small needle I had was in a sewing kit I carry
in my purse...for the safety pin only, of course.
It was from a hotel room several years ago.
Being a pack-rat pays off sometimes.

The pattern that I found on Etsy looks so intricate but is really quite simple.  It's just a series of short stitches going along several swirls.  You can find this and loads of other patterns at Darsie's Etsy shop here.

I just had to make this one into an easel card.
Hopefully the recipient will feel it's worthy of display.

Eleanor was colored using my ProMarkers.
While I was attaching her to the embroidered cardstock,
a glop of glue squeezed out next to the holly leaves.
To save my hours of stitching,
I paper pieced another leaf and berries over the glop.
~~Yes, glop is a very technical term.~~

Other items used in making this card were:
Cardstock:  Bazzill Basics
Pattern paper:  Mary Englebreit from the Michaels $ bin
Rhinestone stickers and chipboard frame:  My stash

I cannot thank Cindy and Corrie enough for
inspiring me to try this new technique!!
This is something that I will absolutely be doing again.
Perhaps not all at once next time.
Breaking it down to small increments will make it
much more manageable for me at least until
I get a bit faster.

Now back to those questions that I mentioned above:
1) Why did you want to try this technique?
I had never seen this until recently and became instantly enthralled with it.  Trying new techniques for both card making and other crafts is something that really excites me.  The fact that I'm not a sewer did frighten me a bit but the cards I've seen with embroidery on them are so gorgeous that I quickly overcame my apprehension.

2) What has been your experience with it?
I loved doing this more than I can say!  It did take quite a lot of time this first try.  Future projects should go much more quickly.  I have a feel for what is needed and can see how getting into a rhythm will happen easily.

Now, what technique have you wanted to try?
This is a perfect time to do it!
If you have any questions about the challenge,
please hop over to our Facebook page.
We'd love to meet you and offer any help you may need.

You can find this card in the following challenges:

How to improve your photos

I have been thrilled to be on the Design Team at
from the moment Lisa invited me.
The challenge this month has made me even happier to be there!
It gave me the final push to do something I've been wanting to do for quite some time and just hadn't gotten around to it.

Our challenge this month:
My craft room -- Construct a lightbox

The challenge is broken down into different parts.  They are:

Challenge Part A:
Do some online research about creating a handmade lightbox & decide which design will best suit you & your needs.  Use your research as a guide/reference & remember to give credit in your challenge post.

Challenge Part B:
Create your lightbox; taking step-by-step photos as you go. Remember to explain each step with how you are putting it together until you have completed your project. It would also be a good idea to include a list of the supplies you have used.

Challenge Part C:
1) Take a photo of one of your designs without the lightbox as you would have done before you created it. This is your 'before' photo.
2) Take another photo of the same design but this time inside your lightbox. This is your 'after' photo.

Challenge Part D:
Explain your experience including:
1) Has the lightbox helped you?  If so, how?
2) Are you using the lightbox inside the house or outside?
3) Are you using lights?  If so, what kind?
4) Tell us two tips or tricks about creating or using a lightbox.

I started this challenge in my usual place...
YouTube!
My search turned up a fantastic video by Pam Sparks.  You can see her video here.  The part that sold me on this design is the fact that it folds flat for storage.  Awesome, right?

Here are the step by step photos of the construction of my lightbox.

Supplies I had to purchase:
2- clamp on work lights: $6.47 each = $12.94
2- 5' lengths of 1/2" PVC pipe: $2.82 each = $5.64
4- 1/2" PVC end caps: $.27 each = $1.08
4- 1/2" PVC elbows: $.31 each = $1.24
4- 1/2" PVC t-connectors: $.24 each = $.96
1- sheet white poster board: $.50
2- Sylvania Daylight 23 w (100w replacement) light bulbs: $9.98

Items I had on hand:
Tape measure, sharpie, pipe cutter (they cost about $8) spring clamps, white fabric (1/2 yard will be more than enough)

The total cost including estimating for the pipe cutter ($8), clamps ($2), and fabric ($2.50) is:  $44.84.  You can cut the PVC with a saw that you already have and save the cost of the pipe cutter.  Large paper binders will work in place of the spring clamps.

You will need to cut the PVC into the following lengths:
4 @ 15"
4 @ 12"
4 @ 1 1/2"

Using a pipe cutter is really simple.  You can see a video on how to use one here.  Note that this video does show cutting copper tubing but it is exactly the same technique for PVC.

After you have all of the lengths cut, you simply assemble the lightbox in the following order:

Place elbows onto each end of a 15" piece of PVC.

Add 1 1/2" pieces into each of the elbows.

Place t-connectors onto each of the 1 1/2" pieces.

Put 15" pieces into the t-connectors.

Repeat those steps until you have a complete rectangle.

Insert the 12" pieces into the open holes of each of the t-connectors.  Also, push the end caps onto the 12" pieces.  These give a nice smooth foot to your lightbox and will help prevent scratching any table tops.

Since the pieces are just snugged together and not glued in any way, the 12" legs will swing down.  The light box is now completely flat and ready for storage.  This is the feature of the design that really sold me!

You can see here that I've just leaned the sheet of poster board up against the back bar of the PVC frame.  The work lights are clamped onto chairs.

I draped the white fabric over the PVC frame and used the spring clamps to keep in taut.

I was amazed at how simple it was to put this entire thing together!
I spent about an hour or so from start to finish...not counting the shopping time.  Even more amazing is the difference it makes in my photos.  Below you can see the before and after.

In this photo, I've used my previous method of indoor photography.  That consisted of white cloth draped on foam core lit with a very bright floor lamp directed straight at the card.  Not good.  I was constantly having to heavily edit the photos to get the color correct.
This is exactly the same card photographed in my brand new lightbox.  The only editing I've done to either picture is to crop them.  The color in this photo, by the way, is what the card looks like in person!
Now, for the final part of the challenge:
Having this lightbox is going to make my posts so much easier because the amount of time I have to spend editing my pictures will be cut dramatically.  Since I live in central Indiana and winter is quickly approaching, I'll be using this indoors.  I did have to search a little bit at Lowe's (my favorite hardware store) for the correct lights.  Pam made a point of mentioning that the light bulbs were "daylight."  I found loads of cool white bulbs but the selection of daylight is rather limited.  In all honesty, I've not tried any other type of lights with my lightbox so I can't say if they make that much difference.  All I do know for certain is that I'm over the moon crazy for the results this current set up has delivered.  I don't plan on changing a thing!

We hope you will be joining us for this month's challenge at
The difference a good lightbox can make to your photography and blog posts will astonish you.

As a huge bonus, there is a prize of $20 (Australian) that you can use at any online craft store you choose!  Just think of the digis you could get...or the awesome embellishments you could find.  Get to looking around for the lightbox that will work best for you.  You'll be so happy that you did.  I sure am!!

If you're a Facebooker, make sure to check out the Dreamtime Designs FB page.  We'd love to have you join us and discuss how your project is going.  You can come by with any questions you have about how we've made our own lightboxes too.  You'll find us here.

Dreamtime Designs Craft Challenges is open for business!!!

If you've hopped over from Dreamtime Designs to see what the heck this is all about....Thanks and keep reading!

For the past few weeks I've been telling you all about the excitement related to Dreamtime Designs Craft Challenges.

Now....
We get to launch our very first challenge.  Lisa promised that we were going to be unlike any other challenge any of us had ever seen.  She, apparently, is quite skilled at the art of understatement!  We were all blown away by her first assignment to us.

Honestly, many of us wondered if we were up to the challenge.  I was definitely among that group!  It all just seemed very intimidating and a bit overwhelming.  That was until I really started breaking it down into the individual components.

Lisa's vision is to allow the artist be known as much (if not more) than their creations.  I love that!  So this challenge is about introducing yourself to the world through your crafts.  Here is your first challenge:

Part A:  Answer the following 5 questions:
1) Where do you live?
2) What do you love most about where you live?
3) Who do you share this special place with?
4) What is your favorite season there & why?
5) What is your most loved thing to do or place to visit & why?
Part B:
Create your design / project that reflects the questions above.
Part C:
Take a photo or two of anything that relates to your above discussion so they can be included in your challenge post.

Do NOT be intimidated by this!
Part A can be just a quick paragraph or you can really put on your author's cap and go to town with it.
Part B can be any kind of craft....we are looking forward to seeing a wide range of projects from all levels of crafters.
Part C can be photos that you all ready have or you can link to photos that you've found online.  Of course, if you're linking please be sure to give the proper credit to the photographers/sites!

As if this post isn't long enough already....I know, what's new?  I am so proud to be sharing my first DDCC Design Team project with all of you!

My answers to Part A are:
I live in Indianapolis, Indiana.  There are far too many things that I LOVE about my hometown to name them all here....even for me.  So, I decided to jump ahead to my favorite season to help narrow down the list of what I love most.  That made my answer super easy:
Football season.
Keep in mind that I'm talking about American Football.  The Indianapolis Colts to be specific.  I share this unbridled obsession with my incredible hubby.  (He does have a name.  It's Mike.)  We schedule our Sundays around game time during several months of the year.  Kinda' sad I know but what can I say?  It makes us happy and keeps us out of trouble.
I decided on these fabulous Mo Manning images because they perfectly depict me and hubby watching a game.  I'm a very vocal fan to say the least.  He's either laughing at me or smiling because he has a wife who doesn't complain about him vegging out on Sundays for the game.

Here's a picture that hubby took of Lucas Oil Stadium (the house that Peyton built) when we were lucky enough to take my parents on a tour of the brand new facility.
This gorgeous stadium is where the Colts play their home games while hubby and I watch from the comfort of our home.....we're too cheap to pay for tickets no matter how much we love our boys in blue.

This is a pic of my sweetie and me with the field in the background.

You may have noticed that the woman in my project is blonde.  I am not.  My beautiful sister-in-law, Kim, is.  Since she and my brother are also huge Colts fans and his birthday is just a few days from now I made this project as a gift for him.
Happy 45th lil' brother! I love you, Dale, & your incredible family!

This easel card sits atop a box with a drawer that I constructed out of chip board.  It was the first time I'd made one and I was flyin' blind.  No template. No tutorial.  My inspiration for this came from my adorable DDCC Design Team 'sister' Mikha.  You can take a look at her's here.  I have plans to do another one so I can remember to write down the dimensions and provide a tutorial in a later post.  It wasn't difficult and I'm looking forward to doing more of these using the knowledge I learned through this trial and error first attempt.

The football is actually a card within a card.  Not only does it prop up the easel, it opens for a spot to write our birthday greetings to Dale.  Love that idea and I'll definitely be using it again!

Inside the drawer, I included a package of home-made candied pecans.  They take 3 simple ingredients to make and are pretty darned good out of this world!  I will be posting a recipe along with pics later.  I would post it now but forgot to get the pictures.  (That may have been done subconsciously just so I could make more pecans.  Yum.)

Here's one last photo to try to show more of the dimension.  Something I almost forgot to point out is the Mountain Dew can in the guy's hand.  Dale's a big Mountain Dew freak so I had to include that....
wonder if he noticed?

Thanks so much for sticking with me for this novel-length post.
Can ya' tell I'm excited about the inaugural challenge at DDCC?!

Lisa, the rest of the DT and I really hope that you'll take time this month to join us.  You will be amazed how much fun it is to really put yourself into a project like this!  If I can answer any questions, please leave me a comment or you can email me.  You'll find the email link in the left column just below my profile.

And, of course, please be sure to become a follower (if you aren't already) so you can catch the tutorials for the box construction and the pecan recipe.  The follow me info is at the top of the right column.

Can't wait to see all of the imaginative and wonderful projects submitted in the October 2013 challenge!  And after you've taken on this original and incredibly fun challenge, you'll be able to add this new badge to your blog:
I will proudly be displaying mine!

Please be sure to visit Dreamtime Designs Craft Challenge to view the guidelines for this challenge.  They're aren't many rules....just enough to keep it fun and friendly for everyone.

I'm off now to visit all of my Design Team 'sisters'....we've had to wait to see each others  projects and the suspense has been driving us nuts.  (Well, okay, maybe we were a bit nuts to start.)  You can find links for all of them in the upper right hand column.  Your time will be well spent visiting each of these lovely, talented ladies!
